Last days in Prague
On August 14, students of the summer educational programs of the International Union of Youth took part in a farewell party on Střelecký Island, an ideal venue for such events.
The island also has the restaurant “Střelecký Island”, which welcomed students this day. Near the restaurant there is an outdoor terrace from where you can watch a beautiful view of the Vltava River, as well as take many interesting photographs against the backdrop of Prague: the promenade and the theater are clearly visible. Students enjoyed drinks and dishes, shared many memorable photos, and also received special MSM certificates for the course.
Střelecký Island is a well-known and rather popular place among the native Czechs, because it is located in the middle of the Vltava, between its two banks.
Tourists usually do not attend the small island and go further to explore more popular routes, but in vain it is an extremely pleasant and calm place. The size of the island does not even reach three hectares, so it was once called the “Little Venice” – at a time when it was divided by the river.
The history of this small piece of land includes several floods, including the last one that happened in the 21st century, when the island completely disappeared under the surface of the water. It is known, that the island was once the property of the royal family, and the first records of its existence existed nine centuries ago – hops were grown on the island for honorable persons.
In the 15th century, the land was donated to the city, from where it passed into the possession of the archers – all sorts of competitions and events for them often took place here.
Today a lot of young couples stroll on the Střelecký Island and friends meet to spend time here – often all kinds of events are organized here, especially in the summer. Here you can sit on a bench and admire the ships sailing along the Vltava. You can also see live swans.
