On the 20th of September, newly arrived students of annual MSM language courses had their first tour in old Prague. The guys met with their professional guide not far from the office of the International Union of Youth, in the very center of Prague below the famous Wenceslas Square.
St. Wenceslas Square is one of the hallmarks of the city, without which none of the tours around old Prague does not take place. This is the place where many significant events in the history of the Czech Republic took place, peaceful demonstrations, holidays and public gatherings. On the street itself, decoreted with the People’s Museum and the monument to St. Wenceslas, which bravely sits on a horse, there are many cafes, shops and hotels. No wonder this street is compared with the Champs Elysees in Paris, because it carries the same great importance and charm to the whole city.
Students went straight to Old Town Square, the historical center of Prague. As early as the 12th century, this place was known as the crossroads of the most important European trade routes around which the famous market grew. A century later, this place was already called the Old Market, but since 1895 the square has been called the Staroměstské náměstí and under this name it attracts many tourists. Here are the famous astronomical clocks, which were recently reconstructed and now even more pleasing to the eye of a tourist and a local. Every hour from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. the Prague chimes strike, making a real performance – at this time, the movement of the figures of the clock begins from the central dial, among them are characters such as death, Turk, greed and vanity. Together with them, 12 apostles go out. The whole performance lasts only a minute, but each time it collects an incredible crowd of enthusiastic spectators.
From there, the students went along the famous royal route (once it was this road that the kings and queens of the Czech Republic went to their castle) on the mystical Charles Bridge. It was built in the Middle Ages and connects the areas of Mala Strana and the Old Town. The bridge itself is decorated with 30 sculptures (the length of the bridge is only 520m), which carry mainly religious content.
We believe that students were impressed by the city and very soon they will continue their journey along its other shore! Do not forget to find photos from excursions in our Instagram and also click on the button below to view the photo archive.
